Anytime that you start a new job, it can be a scary thing to think about and have the new job jitters does not help the situation. You never know what to expect, how you should act, or what exactly you should do, but there are ways to get past this. The key to getting over your new job jitters is to simply add a boost to your confidence. There are several ways in which you can do this.
No matter what type of job it is or where it is located, one thing that many people always find intimidating on the first day is meeting other people. It does not matter the reason that this nervousness pops up. It just means that you may not be looking at this situation in the way that you should. You may start to compare yourself with your coworkers or feel as if you are not able to perform on the level of your coworkers because you are new. This is the type of thinking that should be avoided.
The key to overcoming this obstacle is that you need to stop thinking of your new coworkers as individuals who are better than you. You need to realize that they are simply people, just like you. Do not put them on a pedestal so high that you feel you can never reach it. No matter their status within the company, they are still just regular people, working a regular job, and getting a paycheck, just like you.
To go along with seeing everyone as just “people," you should also take the time to get to know your coworkers. If they invite you to different activities, accept their invitations. Going out to dinner or meeting for fun activities outside of work are great ways to not only get to know them, but also get rid of the nerves of working with new coworkers.
There might be times when being at a new job can get you and your mind distracted. You may be focusing on all the negative possibilities of being the new employee, surrounded by people who have been within the company and learned the ropes long before you did. You may even be worried that you are not dressed for the part of having the right personality to fit in. Either way, throw this thinking away and stay focused on exactly why you are at that job and why you chose this position.
Gain a little confidence by reminding yourself that out of all the people that could have been chosen for this position, you were the one that impressed your recruiter or employer enough to be hired. They saw a potential in you that would benefit their company in a great way.
Another way of viewing this is reminding yourself that you wanted this job for a reason. Think on what that reason is and believe that you will achieve it. There is no reason to doubt yourself when you already know that your employer believes in you and your abilities.
A lot of individuals feel that they should not be who they are when starting a job. They think that it is better to pretend to be someone else, but this is not a good idea. You want your coworkers to know the real you and to know the type of person you are. It is never a good thing to have to put on an act that you will have to continually keep up every day. Once again, remember that you were hired for being just who you are and nothing else.
Another reason you just need to be yourself is because trying to be someone else is only going to cause your unnecessary stress that you do not need when starting a new job.
Never be afraid to ask questions when you really need to. It shows that you are not trying to pretend that you know everything, but that you understand you may not know everything and want to learn. By asking coworkers questions, they can see that you trust them enough to ask questions and receive an appropriate answer. By asking management questions, it shows them that you really want to make sure you get it right and do your work how they want it done.
The most important thing to remember about overcoming new job jitters is to simply give it a little bit of time. Stop trying to force the nervousness away as quickly as possible. It takes time to get to know the new layout of a job, get to know your coworkers, and get to know yourself within the company. If you are patient, follow these tips, and genuinely allow yourself time to take everything in, you will find that overcoming the new job jitters is easy.
